Unusual 20 carat engraved monogram signet ring with deeply carved repousse shoulders set in an gold shield shaped bevel with monogrammed initials JHW. Chased ornate repousse flowers and leaves along the shoulders are masterfully carved. This signet ring is entirely hand wrought with individually carved leaves and flowers along the band. The attractive shield shape with its delicate hand incised border make this a lovely signet ring. A word or two on the shape of the escucheon (shield): the decorative shape of this shield is known as the "two engrailed top" which references the top of the shield with its double scalloped shape. The double scallop references a river or an ocean. The term "engrailed" comes from the Old French word graal, meaning "grail" (cup or chalice) The ring is assayed 20 carat with marks for the lion in passant and the crown whichdates the ring to after 1844 and before 1890. A 20 carat hallmark punch is extremely unusual to find. The maker's mark is D.H. The ring is size 9 US and just over 11 grams.
