About Us

Jackie and MarciaMarcia Moylan and Jacqueline Smelkinson began their business, Moylan-Smelkinson/ The Spare Room Antiques,  in 1979.  They specialize in 18th and early 19th century English porcelain and pottery, whimsical decorative objects and Georgian and Victorian jewelry.

Both their families had been in the retail trade and they were instilled with sound business ethics. They take pride in treating their customers with honor and respect as well as offering only the finest quality merchandise. The greatest joy they have are the wonderful people they have met and befriended over the years and the pleasure of seeing someone become the possessor of a beautiful antique, knowing that this object, once loved, will be treasured again.

Marcia developed a love of early “Japan” pattern ceramics during trips to England and Jackie caught the bug.  They have both read extensively on the subject but nothing replaces sight and touch.  They have over 30 years experience in dealing in early English porcelain and pottery and have known and learned from many of England’s foremost dealers in ceramics.  Their lecture on the development of porcelain in Europe “Tea and Alchemy, from the Porcelain Wars to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party” has delighted audiences at antique shows throughout the country.

Whimsy has always tickled Jackie’s fancy and her house is full of delightful collections.  This led them to deal in what we call collectibles. Cigar cutters, matchsafes, mechanical pencils, paper clips, corkscrews, miniatures, snuff boxes, rattles, scent bottles, whistles, tape measures, pincushions, tartanware and biscuit tins all fall into this category and all are figural.

Antique jewelry has become their greatest love.  From “Queen Anne” necklaces to Georgian day/night earrings, from memento mori rings to mourning jewelry, from Victorian bangle bracelets to Edwardian snake rings their inventory encompasses the finest in design and quality.  Items from their inventory are pictured in several books on jewelry, including Georgian Jewellery 1714-1830 by Ginny Redington Dawes with Olivia Collings.

All merchandise has a full money back guarantee.
